At Drops, we’re committed to preserving linguistic diversity by offering accessible, inclusive, and community-driven learning experiences, and today we’re thrilled to be expanding our language learning offering with six new languages!

Introducing the latest additions to Drops’ language learning offering

On the Drops app, you can now choose to learn Egyptian Arabic, Welsh, Swiss German, Basque, Greenlandic, and Chti – some of the world’s most in-demand but under-supported languages in popular learning apps. With this expansion, learners can explore 57 languages on Drops, including a wide variety of underserved languages. These learning journeys can open the door to unique and rewarding experiences of rich cultures and vibrant, living traditions. Let’s dive into what you can discover in these new languages!

• Egyptian Arabic: Spoken by over 100 million people, Egyptian Arabic is the most widely understood Arabic dialect, thanks to the widespread popularity of Egyptian media, movies, and pop culture. This makes the Egyptian dialect a common first choice when learning Arabic, as it’s considered the most “neutral” and widely comprehensible.
• Welsh: With around 900,000 speakers, Welsh is a Celtic language native to Wales, a country on the island of Great Britain. In recent years, a language revival movement has grown across Wales, supported by schools and government programs, aiming for 1 million speakers by 2050. Learning the language is also a way people of Welsh descent are connecting with their heritage.
• Swiss German: Used in German-speaking parts of Switzerland – especially Zurich, Basel, and Bern – the Swiss German language is spoken by 4-5 million people. While Switzerland is a linguistically diverse country, understanding Swiss German unlocks communication in popular cities for travel, work, and study, as well as strengthening connections with the local culture.
• Basque: Native to the Basque Country, a region of northern Spain and southwestern France, the Basque language is spoken by 1 million people today. The language reflects the region’s rich identity, and learners in the region and globally continue studying Basque to express their cultural pride, connect with their heritage, and explore the Basque culture.
• Greenlandic: The official language of Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat), Greenlandic is an Inuit language spoken by around 57,000 people, most of the island’s population. For many Greenlanders, learning the language is a key ingredient for the preservation of cultural identity, as well as enabling everyday communication with local residents.
• Chti: Also known as Picard, Chti is a regional language spoken by approximately 700,000 people, primarily in the north of France and parts of Belgium. It is an endangered language, with use dropping among youth, but its reflection of the region’s unique culture makes it fascinating to discover for both local residents and language enthusiasts alike.
