About ASL

ASL, or American Sign Language, is a language used by as many as 500,000 people in the United States and Anglophone Canada. ASL is native to the United States but has not received recognition as the official language of any country. It involves not only the use of the hands but also facial expressions and torso movement. Many names and borrowed words are signed through fingerspelling, making knowledge of the ASL alphabet essential for communication for those who’d like to converse in the language.
