About Brazilian Portuguese
Português do Brasil, or Brazilian Portuguese is spoken by about 200 million native speakers in Brazil. Spoken Brazilian Portuguese differs significantly from European Portuguese, but the written language, especially formal written language, is similar.
Part of what makes Brazilian Portuguese different from European Portuguese stems from the other languages it’s come into contact with and the resulting borrowed vocabulary--namely the Amerindian languages. Brazilian Portuguese has many words of Tupi-Guarani origin, African origin, and even English origin.
